In those first years of the new decade, a small cast of particularly devoted admirers emerged within Eliot’s growing circle of visitors and correspondents. There was Alexander Main, a young Scotsman who liked to read her novels aloud on the rugged beach at Arbroath — ‘It is a mercy he was not drowned,’26 Blackwood remarked drily when he heard about this Romantic extravagance. Main sent Eliot long, ardent and rather intimate letters praising her work, which she received with a mixture of appreciation and embarrassment. He wanted to edit an anthology of short passages from the novels and poems; Lewes took up this idea, and pushed it to Blackwood.

Main’s preface to Wise, Witty and Tender Sayings … of George Eliot — which Blackwood did publish, very lucratively, in 1872 — declared that ‘what Shakespeare did for the Drama, George Eliot has been, and still is, doing for the Novel.’ Still conscious of his prize author’s ‘peculiar’ marital situation, Blackwood winced at the dedication Main wrote for the book:

A MORALITY AS PURE AS IT IS

IMPASSIONED
